Why Helping Others Expands Your Own Success

Some moments in life remind us that purpose doesn’t come only from what we achieve — it often comes from what we help others achieve. ✨ Recently, at the PMI Global Summit in Lisbon, I reconnected with the PMP study group I once facilitated. Seeing them proudly certified, thriving, and grateful brought back a powerful truth: giving your time and experience can expand your sense of purpose far beyond work.

Helping Others Is a Form of Giving

In Project Your Life, I write that giving means contributing to others — family, friends, colleagues, communities, even people you don’t know. You can give love, time or money, or love. And, you can as well, give the knowledge that helps someone unlock their potential.

And the more I reflect on my PMP journey, the more I see how true this is.

When I first earned my PMP certification, I thought the main reward would be the career impact. But a bigger reward came later — when I started helping others prepare for their own certification. Sharing my study strategies, my mistakes, my lessons learned on the real world implementation… it became a way of giving back. A way of making my achievement larger than myself.

Giving, in this sense, is not charity. It’s purpose in action. 💡

1️⃣ Giving Generates Gratitude

When you give your time to help someone reach a goal, something beautiful happens: gratitude flows in both directions.

I saw this with my PMP study group. Their messages, their progress, their excitement — all of it created a positive spiral. Their gratitude motivated me to keep giving. And my giving helped them move forward.

Gratitude expands your energy. It makes you want to grow so you can give even more.

2️⃣ Giving Increases Accountability

When you commit to helping others, you raise the stakes of your own goals.

In the book, I share how committing part of my project dividends to Make‑A‑Wish increased my accountability. I couldn’t give up — not when a child’s dream was indirectly tied to my progress.

The same happens when you mentor someone. When people count on you, you show up differently. You become more intentional, more disciplined, more resilient.

Helping others makes your goals matter more.

3️⃣ Giving Strengthens Purpose

Purpose becomes clearer when it’s connected to service.

Helping my PMP group reminded me why I pursued certification in the first place: not just to advance my career, but to elevate the quality of the work I deliver — and to help others do the same.

Purpose grows when you share it. It becomes a mission, not a milestone. It becomes a contribution, not a checkbox. 🌱

Summary and Practical Tip:

Giving is not losing time — it is expanding purpose. Helping others creates gratitude, accountability, and clarity. Your achievements gain meaning when they help someone else achieve theirs. Purpose grows when shared. Success becomes more fulfilling when it lifts others with you.

As Marie Curie wisely said: “You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals.” This powerful reminder highlights that giving to society is a continuous journey of growth and contribution, inspiring us all to make a difference.

💡 Practical Tip: Take one minute today to answer this sentence: “By achieving my 2026 yearly resolutions, I promise to give ________ to ________.” It can be time, knowledge, support, or encouragement. It can be for a colleague, a friend, a community, or someone you haven’t met yet. Then share your reflection in the comments — your perspective may inspire someone else. 💬

Wishing You a FabuLux Weekend! 😉
